The AAO House of Delegates met in Los Angeles in May in conjunction with the 2019 Annual Session. Among resolutions adopted by the HOD were updates to AAO membership policies for international members:

  • International members will be required to have completed the full curriculum of an accredited orthodontic program in the United States or Canada, OR to maintain active membership in the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO) on an ongoing basis, rather than only at the time of initial application. The HOD elected to make this change in order to support the efforts of the WFO to strengthen the orthodontic specialty worldwide.

The WFO has posted information online to assist international AAO members who do not currently hold WFO membership with reinstatement questions.

  • International student members will now be required to maintain active membership in the World Federation of Orthodontists on an ongoing basis, rather than only at the time of initial application.

International student members of the AAO will continue to receive online access to the AJO-DO.* They will not receive the printed journal but may purchase a subscription to it at the discounted rate of $56. Contact AAO Member Services (see below) to order a subscription.

If you have questions about these policy changes, please contact AAO Member Services at (800) 424-2841 or [email protected].

* International members in active practice will continue to receive both online access and the print AJO-DO as part of their AAO membership.
